Mr Ewan Mackay
In an effort to get more people on the
water and racing the Clyde Sonar Fleet in conjunction with the Royal Northern
and Clyde Yacht Club have organised a series of 1 day events of fun informal
racing. The second of which was on Saturday. The idea is to keep the racing
informal, no race instructions, just a quick briefing at the start of the day,
a windward - leeward course, with a start/finish line in the middle. And coaching
for the slower boats as requested. Keep the races short and run as many races
as possible in an afternoon.
With the briefing set a 11:00 and the
racing to start as soon as all the boats where on the water, everybody turned
up for the briefing however a slight lethargy gripped the racers as it was a
glassy flat calm. However with a little cajoling and the fact that the Bar was
not open, we got them going.
A tow out to the racing area and short wait
paid off and a light breeze filled, allowing a course to be laid and the racing
to get underway. In a very gentle
breeze, ASBOat showed good pace in the first race, taking the lead at the first
windward mark, and going on to take the race win, with Grouse in close second.
This was to be the story for most of the day with ASBOat taking the wins in
race 2 and 3 with Grouse in second. However in the final race of the day, the
story changed. The breeze had built to at least 4 or 5 knots and the sun was
shining, the weather was perfect and Grouse took advantage of the increasing
wind, taking the win in race 4 with ASBOat in second.
The Clyde Sonar Association would like to
thank Jean Mackay, Douglas Forester and Colin Craig running the committee boat
and helping to arrange the event.
Our next event is the Scottish Sonar
Championships in 3 weeks on the 4/5th July.
